Cynthia Rylant

This author/illustrator is always a favorite of children in my classroom. She is skilled at telling simple yet engaging stories and bravely stepped into the role of an illustrator as well! What great courage! I love her use of bright colors and beloved topics!

Point to the pictures and use words (adjectives) to describe the story and ask your child to use their own words to describe the pictures as well. This helps children use and increase their language. Expand on their responses with your own words.

Mo Willems

Parents will have as much fun reading books from this author/illustrator as the children hearing them!

Practice your use of tone to speak differently and with feeling for these characters while reading these books. This author shows so much meaning in his use of movement in the words and the pictures!

Jory John

This author has so many fun and engaging stories about being a good friend, having confidence, and other themes related to being a human! Adult readers will find these stories as entertaining and educational as children do!

Steven Kellogg

This illustrator (Kellogg, 1980) tells an amazing story that supports the text through his artistic talent. As a child, this was one of my favorite stories, mainly for the tale hidden in the pictures. I had the great honor of meeting Steven Kellogg at a conference as an adult. He signed my copy of this book and I received the privilege of witnessing his talent in action, as he drew a small pig in my book. Making memories is a treasure books can hold for all of us!

Loren Long

Loren Long is another of my favorites (is it possible to have too many favorites…)! In these beloved stories we are transported to a farm where very good friends support one another and play together. I teach my students to “be like Otis”, who in this story shows his friend how to escape a bad situation instead doing the work himself. “Teaching a man to fish” comes to mind when reading this story. There are also many more books available in the Otis series. I believe the beloved tractor will be a favorite in your home, too!

These are great, too!
